The severity and symptoms of depression may vary in different people, but may include;
- feelings of sadness or irritability
- loss of appetite or overeating
- difficulty sleeping or sleeping more than usual
- decreased ability to concentrate, trouble making decisions or remembering things
- suicidal ideations
- loss of pleasure in previously enjoyed activities
Depression can affect one’s work performance, how you relate with your family and friends, parenting your children and your physical health.
Depression is a complicated illness. Make sure you refer to your doctor and a competent therapist. In addition to medical treatment and therapy, some tips to alleviate your symptoms are;
- exercise: studies have shown that exercise, like walking, stimulate circulation and our natural pleasure neurotransmitters which in turn makes us feel better. Even better is to go outside in the fresh air. The combination of fresh air and sunlight also helps us to feel better.
- get good nutrition: eat a variety of healthy foods to feed the brain. This also helps to alleviate depression
- sleep: try to establish a nighttime routine so that your brain ‘knows’ it is time to sleep and you can fall and stay asleep easier
- be with people: the more we isolate ourselves the stronger the depression. So, go ahead, hang out with people who are caring and fun.
