Step 1
The beginning stages of psychotherapy include scheduling a first appointment. Problem clarification, assessment and goal setting. This will take one to three sessions. A session is usually 45 minutes; once a week. Payment of the session is usually done at the time of the appointment.
Step 2
The middle stage of therapy include learning new skills, therapeutic interventions and the beginnings of achieving therapeutic goals. This can take anywhere from 6 to how many sessions the therapist feels it is appropriate.
Step 3
The final stage of therapy including consistently applying new coping skills and termination. Of course, the client can freely discontinue therapy at any stage at anytime. Average length of therapy is about 12 sessions.
